Nia Gandhi – Jane Eyre

Nia appeared in the cast of Stephen Joseph Theatre’s recent adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which opened in Scarborough on the 8th of April before transferring to New Vic Stoke in May.

Adapted by Chris Bush and directed by Zoë Waterman, this was a brand-new music-based rendition of the Victorian classic, complete with actor-musicians playing multiple roles and performing 19th century pop hits.

Arguably the most famous romantic novel ever written, Jane Eyre follows the eponymous woman as she progresses into adulthood and falls in love with the master of Thornfield Hall Mr. Rochester.

The text is considered one of the most influential in western literature, with its revolutionary focus on the moral and spiritual development of its eponymous main character influencing generations of writers. The critique of contemporary Victorian high society coupled with Jane’s strong-willed nature is seen as lightyears ahead of its time with how it deals with sex, class and the role of women.
