Robyn is appearing as ensemble in William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, running at London’s Donmar Warehouse until the 1st of December, and directed by the Donmar’s Artistic Director Josie Rourke.
Starring Hollywood starlet Hayley Atwell in her debut at the Donmar, Measure for Measure is classified as one of Shakespeare’s “Problem Plays”, too comedic for a tragedy yet too dark and light for a comedy, and sets deep moralistic quandaries directly at the heart of the piece.
Adressing such themes as justice, morality, mercy and the relationship between corruption and purity; it tells the story of Angelo, a puritanical yet ultimately corrupt official, who is left in command of the Duchy of Vienna while the Duke Vincentio is allegedly away on business. The play’s central protagonist, Claudio, is arrested under new strict laws implemented by Angelo for impregnating his lover, Juliet, out of wedlock. In an attempt to save her brother’s head Claudio’s sister Isabella, an extremely religious and unfailingly virtuous woman, begs Angelo for mercy. Angelo refuses but suggests there is one, perhaps, one way the beautiful Isabella could sway his opinion. He states that he will let her brother go but only if Isabella has sex with the him.
The play confronts its audience with this fundamental question: ‘The tempter or the tempted, who sins most?’
