Stefanie Powers – 84 Charing Cross Road

Ms Powers has reprised the role of Helene Hanff in the touring production of 84 Charing Cross Road, starting on the 23rd of April at the Darlington Hippodrome before moving to the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, Malvern Festival Theatre, the Richmond Theatre in London and the Oxford Playhouse before finishing its run at the Cambridge Arts Theatre.

The play, based on the best-selling book by Helene Hanff, tells the story of the book-collecting New Yorker’s 20-year correspondence with Frank Doel (Clive Francis), the chief book buyer for Marks & Co Antiquarian Booksellers located at the eponymous address in London.

Over their two decades of written communication they would form an incredibly tight bond while discussing everything from the sermons of John Donne, to the coronation of Elizabeth II, to the fine art of making a Yorkshire Pudding. Ms Hanff would even go out of her way to send Doel and the other employees at Marks & Co food parcels to ease the strain of post-World War II rationing well as Birthday and Christmas presents.
