Stefanie Powers – 84 Charing Cross Road

Ms Powers has reprised the role of Helene Hanff in the touring production of 84 Charing Cross Road, starting on the 23rd of April at the Darlington Hippodrome before moving to the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, Malvern Festival Theatre, the Richmond Theatre in London and the Oxford Playhouse before finishing its run at the Cambridge Arts Theatre.

The play, based on the best-selling book by Helene Hanff, tells the story of the book-collecting New Yorker’s 20-year correspondence with Frank Doel (Clive Francis), the chief book buyer for Marks & Co Antiquarian Booksellers located at the eponymous address in London.

Over their two decades of written communication they would form an incredibly tight bond while discussing everything from the sermons of John Donne, to the coronation of Elizabeth II, to the fine art of making a Yorkshire Pudding. Ms Hanff would even go out of her way to send Doel and the other employees at Marks & Co food parcels to ease the strain of post-World War II rationing well as Birthday and Christmas presents.

Freddy Elletson – A Little Night Music and The Crucible

Freddy Elletson is currently in rehearsals for two plays at Chester’s Storyhouse as part of their Summer Season 2018: Steven Sondheim’s A Little Night Music and Frank Miller’s The Crucible.

A Little Night Music kicks off the season on the 5th of May. Freddy is Frid, the manservant of Madame Leonora Armfeldt, in this fabulous comedy about interlocking romantic trysts, love, nostalgia, regret and the magic of music on a summer’s night.

The Crucible, on the other hand, is generally a much darker beast. Freddy features in this prescient play of paranoia and the manipulation of hysteria as Reverend John Hale, a “spiritual doctor” from the nearby town of Beverly brought in to diagnose and “cure” the town of its infestation of witchcraft and devilry. This factually accurate depiction of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials opens on the 15th of June.

The “beast from the east” stopped us getting up to press night, we were not amused…

Following smash-hit runs at the National Theatre and in the West End, the production will be touring throughout the UK starting in Leeds before finishing at Sheffield in June. This story by James Graham reveals the fierce political battles and high-stakes drama of British politics in the mid-1970s adapted to stage by director Jeremy Herrin and is a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics.
