Alana Ramsey is currently in rehearsals for Macbeth at the National Theatre. Directed by Rufus Norris and starring Rory Kinnear and Anne-Marie Duff as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth respectively, this retelling of the Shakespearian classic reveals the psychological and physical consequences of the pursuit of power for power’s own sake.
Coming straight from performing as Mrs Mullet in Young Marx at the brand-new Bridge Theatre, also with Rory Kinnear, she plays one of the Murderers who kills Macbeth’s former ally and friend Banquo in an attempt to solidify his newly-gained kingship after assassinating the previous king Duncan, alongside other ensemble roles.
Banquo was with Macbeth during the fateful moment at the beginning of the play when the Witches reveal their prophecy in which they state that Banquo will not be king but his children would be. While Macbeth does indeed murder Banquo, his son Fleance escapes and becomes an ancestor to the Stuart dynasty, the Royal House of Scotland, England, Ireland and the United Kingdom for over 300 years.
